It’s Summer.
It’s hot and humid.
I totally get you if you don’t feel like cooking. But I won’t forgive you if you don’t make something delicious to eat.
It’s no big deal. Getting ingredients right out of the fridge directly to the table isn’t that bad when it’s the right stuff. Fruits can pass for dinner.
Even popcorn. Popcorn and wine. I swear I can call that dinner and I know some of you will relate
But this time I’m giving you a tip that is healthy as it is refreshing and easy.
Take a watermelon. That’s it!
Yes. A watermelon is your meal. Here are four ways you can enjoy watermelons
CHILLED
Take that watermelon and slice it, cover it in plastic film and stick it in the fridge. It will make a good refreshing snack that will surely quench your thirst for something cool
WITH SALT AND PEPPER
It is counter intuitive to sprinkle salt and pepper to sweet fruits but trust me on this. The salt would bring out the flavors and pepper goes with everything. Add some chopped mint or basil if you’re splurging
GRILL
Heat up a grilling pan and put the wedges of watermelons, with the rings on, on the grill until grill marks are formed. Serve Immediately
The heat will bring the flavors and helps the juices come out
PAIR WITH WHITE CHEESE
Just like the French would serve their cheeses with jam and jellies, we like to serve watermelon with out cheese. Watermelons work great with white cheeses like Baladi White Cheese, Bulgarian cheese, Feta, or Halloumi (grilled or raw)
For the perfect watermelon, here are a few tips from thekitchn.com
How to Pick a Watermelon
- Pick it up: Big or small, the watermelon should feel heavy for its size.
- Look for the yellow spot: Watermelons develop a splotch where they rest on the ground. When this splotch is creamy yellow, it’s ripe.
- Give it a thump: Tap the underbelly of the watermelon. A ripe one will have a deep hollow sound. Under-ripe or over-ripe melons will sound dull.
Interesting, I would never think of putting salt on watermelon!
